Welcome to Elx
Elx is situated in the south of the Autonomous Community of Valencia (Spain). It is the capital city of the Baix Vinalopó district. Its population is over 200.000 inhabitants and the district’s surface is 326 sq. Km. It has an intense history reaching back to more than five thousand years. Doubtlessly, the city’s distant past symbol is the Dama d’Elx, a sculpture of a lady dated in the IV century BC, regarded by scholars as a masterpiece of Iberian art. On the other hand, the Palm Groves are the most outstanding feature of the city’s Hispanic-Muslim heritage. Last but no least, the Misteri d’Elx Play is the last surviving example of mediaeval religious theatre performed inside a Roman Catholic church. The UNESCO has distinguished Palm Groves and the Misteri d’Elx Play in the World Heritage list..
