The Elx Palm Groves, World Heritage II
The determination of the people from Elx to preserve the Historical Palm Groves became a major concern when traditional farming came into decline and stopped being economically profitable. In recent years a good number of palm groves have become public gardens that can be enjoyed by citizens and visitors. A great effort is also underway to keep alive traditional trades and the study of natural methods that will ensure the maintenance and promotion of palm groves. The Phoenix Station International Research Centre was founded to develop research programmes in the date palm
field.
Night Fall in Europe’s largest oasis
Palm trees give us not only dates but also the White Palm used in two cultural events: the Palm Sunday Procession, a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest and the performance of the Misteri d’Elx (Elx Mystery Play), distinguished as World Heritage and also a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest. In the Misteri d’Elx an angel carries a white palm in his hand that he will give to Our Lady before her ascent to heaven.
