The Elx Palm Groves, World Heritage I
The Elx Palm Groves are well known for their uniqueness and beauty. The UNESCO, in the World Heritage List of the year 2000, distinguished them for their exceptional value. Fossil date palm seeds have been discovered in this area of the Mediterranean. This would support the theory that palm trees have been present in Elx since prehistoric times. In any case, it was after the Muslim invasion that the present-day palm grove structure was adopted. Irrigation created a landscape that has been closely related to Elx’s historical record.

The city-palm tree relationship has reached the present day in absolute harmony. Such is the case that many public buildings and equipments raise in a genuine ocean of palm trees. Inhabited spaces are completely integrated with the palm groves creating an exceptional picture. The Palm Groves system, with over 200.000 trees in the district, is the city of Elx most cherished environmental heritage.
